In a world facing colossal challenges, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the enormity of it all. Climate change, mental health issues, and countless other crises are at the forefront of our concerns. It’s common to feel powerless in the face of such monumental issues, but here’s the good news – there’s a way to get involved and help change the world, and it’s called “Cusp of Clarity.”
Cusp of Clarity isn’t just another initiative; it’s an up-and-coming student-based project dedicated to saving the world. The journey started back in 2019, with University student, junior Aidann Gia Bacolodan and her sister leading the way. Initially, the objective was to spread awareness and raise funds for climate change. They hosted clean-ups, sold stickers, and organized bake sales to fundraise. Their dedication bore fruit, as they managed to raise an impressive $1,000 for the World Resources Institute, a renowned global climate charity. Aidann Gia soon realized that the world’s problems ran deeper than just environmental concerns.
“You can’t save the world without saving climate change,” Aidann Gia stated.
In 2022, a pivotal moment in her life sparked a new mission. During her senior year of high school, she underwent a trying experience, which led her to become a passionate advocate for mental health rights. Aidann Gia channeled her newfound passion into a powerful platform, the “Cusp of Clarity Initiative Podcast,” designed to educate and inform people about mental health issues and prevention strategies. Her commitment to making a difference led her to Pace University, where she double majored in Political Science and Peace and Justice Studies with a minor in Communications. In her academic journey, Aidann Gia discovered that many global issues were interconnected. This revelation reshaped the Cusp of Clarity Initiative into a true world-saving organization, bearing the simple yet profound motto: “Save the World.”
Every year, the organization focuses on fundraising for a climate charity while hosting various events to achieve its goals. In addition, a secondary fundraiser is held, addressing different issues each year. The core mission remains climate change, but their focus evolves. This year, the spotlight is on mental health, with a campaign to raise awareness for borderline personality disorder and to foster a sense of community. She understands that one of the key contributors to declining mental health is the loss of community and friendships, especially in the wake of the pandemic. In response, she has hosted 15 to 20 Charcuterie board nights, where students come together over cheese, crackers and engaging discussions. The goal is to create bonds and friendships that endure. These gatherings facilitate connections, bridging the disconnect often felt in a fast-paced metropolis like New York City. With discussions highlighting the importance of mental health, these events are a beacon of hope in a city that can sometimes feel isolating.
The Cusp of Clarity Initiative has come a long way, having raised approximately $4,000 for various charitable causes. Now, it operates through three dedicated teams: the New York City team, with five members; the Washington DC team, consisting of eight individuals and the Calgary team, comprising five passionate members. Each team works tirelessly, each in its unique way, yet united by the same overarching goal: to raise funds and raise awareness.
As a student, you possess an incredible power to make a change. The Cusp of Clarity Initiative welcomes students from all backgrounds who are willing to channel their energy into making a difference. Whether you’re passionate about climate change, mental health or any other global issue, this organization offers a platform to contribute your skills and ideas to the cause.
“Being involved with Cusp of Clarity since last year, I’ve loved the aspect of meeting new people while having activities to do. It’s a great way to get to know people you wouldn’t normally talk to, and the best part, the donations go to charity. Instead of just hanging out with friends, it’s nice to make an event out of it,” Kimberly DeBarger-Gestring, a sophomore majoring in Peace and Justice studies, said. “I think it’s important to get involved because it’s such an easy way to donate and make a change, and it’s fun.”
“I love the thrill of building a business from the ground up, but I guess that’s just the finance bro in me. I love seeing the turnout and success of all the events we host knowing that each person that attended is supporting a good cause. Every little bit of support matters,” Paolo Bayle, a freshman Finance major, added. “If we’re going to save the world, we need to work together, and that starts with the Cusp of Clarity.”
If you’ve ever wondered how you can be a part of something bigger than yourself, the Cusp of Clarity Initiative is your answer. With each new member, the collective strength grows, and the impact multiplies. Dare to be a part of something extraordinary. Dare to make a difference. Dare to join the Cusp of Clarity Initiative!
