President Joe Biden is expected to draft over $100 billion dollars to Ukraine, Israel and other global conflicts in the next few days. If approved by Congress, this could cover two years of funding, but the government has failed to pass a bill to assist in domestic and international conflicts. Another country that could benefit from the bill is Taiwan along with the fortification of the US-Mexico border, according to people connected to the plan. But Republicans demand concessions from the Democrats in a House where they still haven’t elected a new official speaker yet.
The package is expected to send $10 billion in military assistance to the Israeli army, as well as around $60 billion for Ukraine, according to people related to the proposed plan who discussed in anonymity with the New York Times. The bill will also be tentative to mitigate the tensions between Taiwan and China as the government of Beijing has been threatening the Indo-Pacific region. Among the domestic issues, a piece of the deal, if approved, would be dedicated to strengthening the border with Mexico and improving the border security.
This new plan comes right after House Republicans denied a $300 million draft to train and equip the Ukrainian army last month. Republicans repeatedly said that for emergency aid to be approved, the Democrat Party would have to make allowances. As of last month, Biden announced the government would continue the controversial building of the border with Mexico. Secretary of the Treasury Janet Yellen said in an interview to Sky News that the U.S. can afford to support Israel and Ukraine in its respective conflicts for two years given the current debt-to-GDP ratio of 122 percent, “American economy is doing extremely well,” she stated.
Ideologically, President Biden has been very vocal about his support for Israel and Ukraine. He just came back from a visit with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, sent multiple aircraft and ships immediately after the Hamas terrorist attacks and made clear Israel has the “right and responsibility” to defend itself. He even put Hamas and Putin to the same degree. “Hamas and Putin represent different threats, but they share this in common: they both want to completely annihilate a neighboring democracy, completely annihilate it,” the President specified in a press conference. This comes after a ten-day period over the region over Gaza which Israel has delayed a ground invasion. Israel has been cautious to make any move as the 200 Israeli captives are still trapped in Hamas’ bases. Any reckless movement could cause a very dangerous aftermath.
Nell Capellan, a student at the University, has concerns about the plan- especially when it comes to when America still faces so many domestic issues. “We are talking about hard-working people who pay taxes and expect a better environment and community,” she stated, “But instead they are investing in war. A war that we shouldn’t be in. It’s all a form of control, yes go and fund [into] the war so we can be painted as the heroes.”
