Bearing “Pokémon” plush gifts, fans gathered around the stage at Brooklyn Steel on Oct. 24 to cheer on Atlanta indie singer-songwriter Faye Webster as she performed music predominantly from her 2021 album “I Know I’m Funny Haha” and 2019 album “Atlanta Millionaires Club”, alongside her latest singles “But not Kiss” and “Lifetime”.
The night had started with a performance from punk band Upchuck, whom Webster later claimed, “They’re literally my favorite band ever.” Upchuck invited Webster on stage to perform with them during their set – to the audience’s surprise. The opening set was then followed by an intermission of music similar to Webster’s and Upchuck’s, as the audience shared conversation and a few latecomers slowly moved themselves in, anticipating Webster’s performance.
Opening with the latest release, “But Not Kiss,” the audience joined in a collective hurrah, cheering on Webster’s heavenly performance, a song featuring simplistic verbiage exploring the hardships of longing for a love that once was, but not missing the situation that romance had placed her in; a common theme amongst much of her discography. “Better Distractions” and “Right Side of My Neck” were songs to follow in which she also traverses through similar ideas.
Adorned screams erupted from the crowd in response to Webster’s “Eterna City” cover, a song off the hit game “Pokémon”, featured in the “Diamond”/”Pearl”/”Platinum” release of 2006. “Pokémon” has been known to be a popular interest, making multiple appearances on the singer’s Instagram. During this performance, Webster accepted plush gifts from the audience, stating: “I recently just got the Cubone plush! It takes up most of my bunk, it’s so big.” Webster then segued to playing “In A Good Way,” a song which explores the thematic idea of experiencing a love which engulfs you in such overwhelming happiness, an idea offering a contrasting theme to the opening song.
When Webster retreated off stage, the audience began to scream “Encore!”, in motivation to the indie artist to perform final songs. She had then come on stage to sing an unreleased song: “Feeling Good Today,” with memorable lyrics: “I got paid yesterday/I might buy something dumb/Because I am pretty childish,” followed by, “Might find a new hobby/Just to ditch it.” Fans made it evident that this song was relatable through their enthusiastic cheers and whistles. To close the evening, Webster sang her most popular song, “Kingston,” which garnered over 145 million listeners on Spotify. The song had gained popularity off TikTok and was a song which had everybody in the audience singing.
Webster’s friends had attended the evening, notably Claire Cottrill, professionally known as Clairo, took to Instagram to post about the night – shocking fans who did not know she was in attendance. It is worth mentioning that Cottrill herself had performed on the same stage Webster had in 2019.
