With winter heading for the door and warmer weather on the horizon, figuring out how to make the switch in styles, colors, and layers can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are six spring fashion trends to consider when adding new pieces to your wardrobe as the warms up.
Sheer Sheer Sheer Neutrals
Although we’ve seen sheer take over runways in the past, this spring there’s a new way to wear it. Brands like Coperni and Acne Studios taking their own creative license and transforming heavenly, white, sheer fabrics into sexy and angelic silhouettes. Whether you need a beach cover-up, evening attire or a dinner outfit, there’s nothing quite like a neutral sheer dress to announce spring has sprung.
Oversized Button-Up Shirts
Oversize button-up shirts have been a clear sign of spring for years now. The warmth the long sleeves provide and the airiness of the shirt’s material has made it the perfect piece for your spring wardrobe. Styled with denim jeans, shorts, or skirts alongside a flat or sneaker makes for a simple, stylish and affordable look for this spring season. Some of my personal favorites are mens oversized polo shirts I pick up in thrift stores in the city. Almost every thrift store I’ve been to has an almost overwhelming number of button-ups to pick from. One of my favorite places to look for them is L-Train Vintage as there are always loads and they’re almost always below ten dollars.
Studio 54 Resurgence
From shimmer to metallic to rhinestones, this year has seen a resurgence in Studio 54 glamor and 80s realness. This spring season is not exempt from this, with brands like Kate Spade and Ralph Lauren taking to their runway shows adorned in sequins, rhinestones and more. Brands like Gucci and Rabanne took a simpler route by pairing plain jeans and sweaters with bright, sparkly and eye-catching pieces. Whether you choose to go crazy with sparkles and metallics like Kate Spade or plan to follow Gucci and Rabanne’s simpler approach, sparkles, sequins and rhinestones are a must this spring.
Super Short Shorts
Micro shorts, super short shorts, leather mini shorts and more have taken over not just runways this season but have infiltrated clubs and bars. The short shorts, like seriously short, have already transitioned from Alexander McQueen and Prada’s runways to the street. With spring bringing the sun but not necessarily the extreme warmth, the short shorts work best paired with a knee-high boot or oversized jacket.
Maroon/Burgundy
Last season red took over runways and street style, and was deemed the “color of the season.” This spring season’s runways have appointed maroon/burgundy as the color of this season. With brands like Tom Ford, Bottega Veneta, Valentino, Saint Laurent and so many more taking to the runways decked out in rich maroon and burgundy. From matching sets to skirts, dresses and jackets, the color was on too many runways to count.
Stripes/Patterns
Whether it was animal print or stripes, this season’s runways have forecasted fun. Schiaparelli played with black and white stripes combined with incredible silhouettes and shapes. Ralph Lauren took a more laid-back approach with their classic button-up polo and graphic jeans. One of my favorite striped looks from this season was Chanel’s, the bright yellow and baby pink stripes combined with white and hints of black stripes made for a super chic, seasonal, and colorful look. Animal print, which has recently had a resurgence in popularity on social media, made its way onto the runway this season with brands like Fendi, Michael Kors and Ulla Johnson decking models out in prints like peacock, zebra, tortoise and cheetah.
