With the winter season in full swing, it is important to make sure you’re dressed for the bitter cold of New York. While it can be hard to find a balance between being fashionable and warm, it’s not impossible. If you need help styling your wardrobe for the cold weather, here are some fashion tips for this season.
Coats
Your coat is going to be the main focus of your outfit in the winter, so you want something that’s both fashionable and keeps you warm. A huge trend online lately is big faux fur coats, which is a great way to look cozy and chic this winter. While they can be expensive, you can find these coats secondhand on sites like Depop or Poshmark.
If faux fur isn’t your thing, another staple piece for your closet is a puffer jacket. This type of coat is perfect for an everyday look and personally, I think it is the warmest option. Puffer jackets are also great for layering with other pieces. The North Face puffer jacket has been a popular piece for a while, but if you’re looking to save money you can find a good puffer jacket almost anywhere. Especially in New York where they’re considered a necessity.
Earmuffs, scarves and gloves
You can get creative with your winter accessories. Big, fluffy earmuffs have been a persistent and lovable trend this year. Not only do they keep your ears warm, but they’re adorable and inexpensive.
Big scarves are another winter closet staple (I personally don’t leave my apartment without one). There are so many ways to wear scarves, with TikTok sharing a variety of cute ideas on how to tie them. Scarves are a great way to spice up an outfit while also keeping you bundled up. Gloves are a must in the winter, with leather gloves being a great option for both the style and warmth. All these accessories can be found at street vendors in the city if you want to grab them on the go.
Shoes
In a walkable city like New York, keeping your feet warm and comfortable is a must. In recent years UGG have come back in style proving to be a great shoe for everyday wear. Not only are they one of the warmest shoes, but they also have a variety of different styles and colors to choose from.
If you’re not wearing a shoe layered with fur like UGGs, having thick socks is crucial for the cold weather. SKIMS has some great warm socks, but you can also find them at places like Target or Amazon. A good pair of winter boots are another necessity for snowy days. Dr. Martens are a great indestructible boot, and you can even get ones that are fur lined.
Sacrificing style never has to be an option—even in the bitter cold. There are many ways to still be stylish and warm during the winter months. It can become easier to ditch fashion when it’s cold out, but dressing up in the winter can turn what feels like a long, depressing season into an opportunity to play around with new accessories and styles.
