On Jan. 25, Timothée Chalamet made history as only the second actor in history—after Gary Busey—to be both the host and musical guest on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” (SNL). Chalamet starred in the action-packed 12th episode of the show’s 50th season, which included the usual use of political satire, surprise guests and eccentric, laugh-provoking sketches.
Timothée Chalamet, the 29-year-old French-American actor, walked confidently onto the stage as host for the third time in his career. Chalamet’s popularity, fueled by his acting talent and charming personality, has only grown over the past year with the release of “Dune: Part Two” and “A Complete Unknown.” Fans eagerly anticipated his return to “Saturday Night Live,” but many were surprised to learn he would also be the musical guest. His only known connection to the music industry stems from his recent portrayal of Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown.”
Chalamet’s monologue featured the actor poking fun at his mustache, which has been widely discussed online. He also joked about his role as the aforementioned musician and his many losses of various awards, which the audience reacted to by laughing loudly. He began the show with one of the best sketches of the night, “Bungee,” in which Chalamet plays an exercise instructor for a class that doesn’t involve any actual exercise but instead consists of doing aerial fitness while being attached to a bungee cord from the ceiling. The sketch was a favorite due to Chalamet’s physical comedy and timing as he threw cake at cast members, lunged at fellow sketch star Michael Longfellow and fully committed to the dancing he was doing.
Another popular sketch with multiple videos on social media going viral was “New Barista Training,” where Mikey Day and Heidi Gardener played coffee shop owners trying to train their new baristas to make funny and simple coffee puns for the customers. At the same time, Chalamet’s character, Benny, continuously takes his turns too seriously, making each joke perfect for standup rather than a small coffee shop. Chalamet’s dedication to the outlandish character was hilarious and admirable, with multiple TikTok users comparing his comedic style and voice to Adam Sandler in this sketch.
The moment finally came for Chalamet’s heavily anticipated and mysterious performance of songs by Bob Dylan, and he did not disappoint. Sandler, a good friend of Chalamet, welcomed him to the stage, proving fans suggesting how similar Chalamet is to Sandler to be correct.
Donning large sunglasses, a baggy jacket and jeans, Chalamet sang “Outlaw Blues,” a shocking yet refreshing surprise. The actor specified in his monologue that he chose his favorite Dylan songs rather than the most popular or well-known ones. Chalamet also covered “Three Angels” from the 1970 album “New Morning,” which wasn’t even featured in “A Complete Unknown.”
For his second performance, Chalamet performed “Tomorrow Is A Long Time,” a Dylan deep cut initially released as a demo on “Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits Vol. II” in 1972. His performance of these lesser-known songs showed his knowledge of Dylan and established him as a true fan of the musician.
Following Chalamet’s performances, we got the best sketch of the night. The “Grandma’s Birthday” sketch was hilarious in its unseriousness and raunchiness, being so outlandish that you couldn’t help but laugh. Chalamet plays a doctor and the boyfriend of Kelsey (Gardener) as they attend Kelsey’s Grandmother’s birthday. Suddenly, the grandma passes out and needs CPR. Chalamet’s character decided to take a more nontraditional approach with CPR, and fart on the grandma’s face, which woke her up immediately. The audience was in an uproar, making it safe to say this sketch was a fan favorite.
Chalamet, now a three-time host and a first-time musical guest, has established his ability to perform on “Saturday Night Live.” He supersedes all expectations in his physical comedy, comedic timing and charisma whenever he graces them. Singing effortlessly to honor a musician he admires takes guts and sets him apart from most actors coming to host the show.
