From Jan. to March, I spent my free time reading “The Daevabad Trilogy” by S.A. Chakraborty, consisting of the books “The City of Brass,” “The Kingdom of Copper” and “The Empire of Gold.” A fantasy series, these books completely transport the reader into another world. In the first book, we meet Nahri, who is taken from her life in Egypt only to find out that she is a daeva– a magical being. We follow this brave character as she adventures and adapts to the city of Daevabad and goes on to change her new magical world. My favorite part of the series was seeing the relationships that Nahri builds throughout, whether it is with her mentor or her enemy, she is an incredible protagonist with a heart of gold.
The story, though complicated to explain, takes on a political commentary about what it means to lead a country and how people will abandon their morals for power. The story is an extremely cohesive comment on family, power, religion and equality that takes place in a beautiful fantasy world full of incredible characters and magical creatures. While reading the trilogy, I wondered how Chakraborty could even come up with so many original ideas and create such an original world that stands out in comparison to other fantasy series.
Overall, I gave all three books 4/5 stars. “The Daevabad Trilogy” is absolutely a series worth reading.
