On Friday, Nov. 7th, the Recording Academy announced the nominees for the 2026 Grammys which will be hosted on Sunday, Feb. 1st. The nominations for the main categories were announced on a YouTube livestream, featuring prominent winners from this year like Chappell Roan, Doechii and Sabrina Carpenter. The remainder of the 95 categories were announced on the Grammys official website immediately after the livestream concluded.
The Recording Academy over the past decade have been taking significant measures to diversify their voting body which has been reflected in this year’s nominees. With nine nominations, Kendrick Lamar is the most nominated artist at this year’s Grammys. Lamar is being recognized for his sixth studio album “GNX” released in late 2024. One of the main critiques of the Recording Academy has been their lack of recognition of hip-hop artists in the main four categories. This year, three of the eight nominees are hip-hop artists which could be monumental in rectifying that shortcoming.
On Nov. 3, it was announced that the Recording Academy extended invitations to the members of the Latin Recording Academy as part of its welcoming of more than 3,800 new members to the voting body. This is reflected in the six nominations for Bad Bunny and his album “Debí Tirar Más Fotos.” He is also one of the eight artists nominated for album of the year and his win would be a historical moment for the Grammys as no Latin artist has won the award.
The only other album nominated in the category of Album of the Year that is the only representation for their respective genre is “Mutt” by Leon Thomas. The lead single and title-track “Mutt” peaked at Number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100 and is critically acclaimed for its perfect blend of modern R&B and classic Jazz and Soul influences.
The remaining three albums in the category of album of the year are held by Pop artists each with a unique defining character. Lady Gaga released “Mayhem” off the back of the global smash collaboration “Die with a Smile” with Bruno Mars. Many have considered it to be a return to form for Gaga with its blend of electro, dance and rock influences. The next release chronologically is “Swag” by Justin Bieber, a surprise album released over the summer that blends R&B with modern lo-fi trends that curates a nostalgic atmosphere for listeners. On August 29th, Sabrina Carpenter released her seventh studio album,“Man’s Best Friend,” coming off the back of her rise to global stardom with her album “Short n’ Sweet.” She released the lead-single “Manchild” in early June, which hit Number 1 on the Billboard hot 100 and is nominated for both Record and Song of the Year. “Man’s Best Friend” solidified her place as a dominant force in Pop music and culture, with her album cover sparking controversy over the summer for its provocative nature.
The nominees for Best New Artist are another possible contentious point of conversation. The nominees include Olivia Dean, KATSEYE, The Marias, Addison Rae, sombr, Leon Thomas, Alex Warren and Lola Young. Each of these artists have had a defining moment in pop culture offering them notoriety. All of these artists besides Olivia Dean and Leon Thomas have no other Grammy nominations.
The conversation on Grammy Nominations cannot be had without including those that did not make the cut. The Weeknd and his album “Hurry Up Tomorrow” were not nominated, despite the fact that at this year’s ceremony he gave a performance meant to represent the lengths the Recording Academy are taking to right their wrongs of the past. Gracie Abrams’ “That’s so true” did not receive any nominations despite its chart dominance. Ariana Grande, Benson Boone, ROLE MODEL and Lorde are some of many who are not being recognized despite their efforts this year.
The Grammys are always plagued with controversy. Fans, critics and industry executives alike all express their opinions on both nominations and the eventual winners. The Grammys have never been an objective measure of an artist’s talent or success, they rather exist to recognize and honor achievements in artistic excellence and technical proficiency throughout numerous genres. Though many criticize the Grammys choices, the award still remains the highest honor one can receive in the music industry.
2025 has been a turbulent year for music which is in no doubt due to the juggernaut that was 2024. It represents a transitional period for music from the way it is consumed and received to the experimental elements of it. Artists are now incentivised to find their own niche, moving music away from monoculture into a new era that is yet to be defined. The 2026 Grammy nominations reflect such reality and prove that music is evolving and will continue to evolve.
